Your wild-haired, introverted, chronic spiller, all-black wearer, music-obsessed, thrift store frequenter, all-the-emotions-feeler, chocolate-loving new best pal!
Today I’m sharing some of my favorite non-white wedding dresses, because while wearing a white dress continues to be the vision for a lot of couples, it might not be the vibe for others (hi, it’s me!). Whether you don’t agree with the implications of wearing white, or simply just don’t vibe with wearing that color, your wedding dress does not have to be white to be beautiful (and you don’t need to wear a dress at all, but more on that to come!). There are so many options available if you’re dreaming of some alternative, bold styles. So if you just can’t imagine wearing a traditional white dress for your wedding, but still want to wear something that makes you feel beautiful, then look no further. These gorgeous non-white wedding dresses are calling your name!
If you’re looking online for a non-white wedding dress, you might have already realized how tough it can be to find options that fit those terms. Since the term “bridal” is still mostly synonymous with the color white, I recommend broadening your keywords when searching online. Avoiding terms like “wedding” or “bridal” is a great place to start, while searching specifically for dresses without a traditional color scheme can also help. I recommend using terms like “evening gowns”, while other marriers have recommended searching “prom dresses”, “quinceanara dresses”, or “party/holiday dresses”.
Etsy has so many great options, but do your homework before purchasing. First, make sure the shop you’re purchasing from has lots of solid reviews. And if you find something you like, you can run a reverse image search to make sure the photos aren’t stolen from other designers (scams like this are so sad, but unfortunately do happen!). If there’s a particular dress you’re eyeing but are unsure how it’ll look on you, you can always visit a local dress shop and try on dresses with similar cuts. When you’re ready to order, make sure to send in your exact measurements as sometimes these shops create custom pieces. It’s also important to buy as early as possible so you have plenty of time for alterations, if needed.
And if you just can’t find anything you like pre-made, a final option is finding a style or cut of white dress that you love. You can see if the designer can create it in a different color, or see if it’s possible to have the dress dyed or further customized to your liking by other vendors (check out Renegade Bridal for gorgeous custom dying services!).
Here are some of my favorite designers I came across while doing research for this post (I donโt receive any sort of compensation for sharing, but wanted to pass these along!)
If you’re dreaming of a woodland fantasy style of dress (think Lord of the Rings for the modern era), Flora and Lane is a MUST. Their attention to detail and made-to-order philosophy ensure that each piece is as unique as you are. The brand’s commitment to ethical and sustainable practices made me fall in love with them even more.
For sophisticated couture-like dresses, look no further than Teuta Matoshi. This woman-owned and empowered brand is known for its feminine designs and use of unconventional color patterns. While some designers only offer one or two non-white styles, Teuta Matoshi offers color options for everyone.
If soft, flowy wedding dresses are what you’re after, then MYWONY is the brand to start with. This Ukraine-based designer (they ship worldwide!) specializes in gowns with a gentle and ethereal vibe. Their non-white dresses are generally softer in color, which are great if you’re looking for something subtle, but they do have bolder color options.
If you consider yourself more of a rebellious fantasy baddie (think Tim Burton vibes or mischievous Slavic royalty) than a trend chaser, Chotronette is the brand for you. The Romanian design duo specializes in epic colored gowns, complete with capes and corsets, that you won’t find elsewhere. These works of art will leave you, and your guests, speechless in the best way.

Zander by Maggie Sottero is the kind of black dress that I’m an absolute sucker for. The long sleeves, the lace skirt and sheer bodice are so much more stunning in black (in my opinion ๐). This gown also has nude or black color options for the lining, and I’m surprisingly drawn to the nude color! Maggie Sottero has retailers in the US, including The Wedding Shoppe in Saint Paul!
