Maddy and Adam’s session was my first time shooting a winter engagement session in Minneapolis, and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Folks in Minneapolis know how to survive (and thrive!) during this time of year, and the city has so many location options to embrace the season.
Maddy and Adam met through mutual friends back in 2015. What I love most about their story is that their relationship started organically over a shared interest – films. What started as small talk about their favorite movies one morning turned into a solid connection, and is something that they continue to bond over almost ten years later. When these two reached out about their September wedding (and mentioned their love for Lord of the Rings), I knew I needed to work with them.
For a winter engagement session in Minneapolis, Minnesota we have a few options. We can embrace the cold and photograph outside, lean into cozy vibes with indoor locations, or a mix of both. Maddy and Adam wanted their engagement session to feel casual and cozy, so we kept it simple with three indoor locations that spoke to them.
We started our session at the couple’s home in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s their first home together, and it was important for them to have scenes from their time here documented. We spent a lot of time in the living room, where they often come together after a long day to reconnect. Some of their favorite activities are reading together, making cocktails and listening to records, so we made sure to showcase these.
The couple initially bonded over their shared love of movies, and Adam works in video production, so a movie theater was another clear choice for an indoor location. We chose the Main Cinema in the heart of St Anthony Main in Minneapolis for our session. The Main Cinema is an independent theater that shows Hollywood movies to art-house films. The folks here are so friendly and accommodating. All they had us do was come in between showings to use the space. We had about 20 minutes of undisrupted shooting time, which was plenty for us. I’ve wanted to do a session in a movie theater for a looong time, so thank you Maddy and Adam (and the Main!) for letting this happen!
I love seeing the city through the eyes of my couples. I’ve learned about so many amazing local spaces over the years simply because of where couples take me during their sessions. Maddy and Adam are regulars at Elusive by Dashfire and it’s now easily a favorite of mine too (sorry guys!). We decided to end the session here for some cozy photos with cocktails (they have excellent NA options, too!). If you want to photograph here, definitely reach out to management first for permission. There’s no rental fee, but the space gets busy quick! Plan to either show up before opening (depending on what your contact says), or get there right at 4pm when they open to beat the crowd.
